Okay, so I had a problem with my previous PC build sometimes not switching on, so have changed:

1). PSU - Vcool 480w
2). Motherboard - Abit SG95
3). CPU - Pentium D 925 2x3ghz
4). RAM - 2 x Crucial 1GB

AND IT STILL DOES IT! Sometimes it won't switch on, only removing the PSU, disconnecting EVERYTHING and starting again will get it to boot.

Also, when it DOES boot, once in windows, it sits there for about 1 minute before it will do anything, opening Internet Explorer, for example, just gives the 'program not responding' and then eventually does everything a minute later. It then runs fine.

Anyone any ideas? I'm tearing my hair out as I cannot believe I've spent all this money, only to have the same problems.

I've tried a new mains cable, but I am eyeing up the power supply in my house as possibly dodgy....?!

Cheers,
James

Yep check those rails and switch leads using a multimeter...

Turn PC off but leave plug connected.

Take power connector (Molex) and insert black probe into black wire connector.

Insert red probe into red wire connector.

Set multi-meter to 20volts and turn on PC.

Read out should be around +5volts.

Turn off PC and repeat process but this time connecting the red probe into the yellow wire.

Power PC on again and read the read out should give you around +12volts

Allow for some deviation. For 5volts between +4.8volts and +5.2volts and for 12volts between +11.5volts and 12.6volts.

Anything outside these there is certain to be a problem with the power supply.

to check the switch leads you need to measure the resistance (ohms)

Ensure there is no power supply. Unplug PSU completely.

Set the multi-meter to ohms and touch probes to test.

To test cable for example, place one probe into one end of the cable and the other into the other end. You should get a signal when the switch is ON!.
