Hi all, just installed a brand new x1800xt 512mb!

I load call of duty 2 and begin playing, and i notice the smoke seems to rise in 'boxey' shapes, and this naver happened with my 6800gt. Is this a fault?

Also, when i turn on my pc, the fan kicks in real fast, then slows down. Does the fan turn faster when the card gets hotter?, as its now at 70 degrees (in doing the maunal overclock thing) and its not going any faster.

Any help would be great.

Hmm, the smoke rising in box shapes is most likely a setting somewhere. My CoD2 plays smooth as silk and looks great. Have you set the driver settings to application preference (don't use Adaptive Anti-Aliasing on CoD2, that is only for Xfire/SLi, trust me! it really hits performance hard). Then make sure you are running Trilinear Anisotropic filtering at least and Anti-Aliasing x2 at least in game settings. This should run fine and look great.

As for overclocking, either use the automated clocking utility or don't bother until a good program comes out to clock these cards.

Excellent, ive overclocked my card to 689/1693! :D

That a good clock?

Ill will check out CoD2 in a minute.

I still only have the origional drivers that came with the card instaled.

Hmm, now more problems.....ive got glowing red boarders on the sides of my screen on CoD2. The smoke still rises in blocks, and the grass has dotty straight flashing lines all over it. :(

Other games seem to be running ok

Any advice?

The flasing lines etc will be artifacting from the unstable overclock. You might need to raise some voltages etc to get it stable.

Either your card is overheating, or the clock is unstable that it was clocked to. I would also download the latest Catalyst 6.3 drivers from ATi which are excellent drivers. The ones which came with the card are probably the 5.11's which are old and bad.

Ok, will do. I did return my overclock to normal, and CoD2 was just the same tho.
If that's the case, the card might not be unstable at that clock but I suggest you reinstall CoD2 completely and install the latest patch and try again (patch 1.01 I believe).

Done and dusted.
Installed the new 6.3 drivers, that sorted CoD2 out.

Now i just need to find a good stable overclock.

Any recomendations?

Run the overdrive utility again and if it doesn't lockup and finds 689/797, then try playing games - if they run fine, then keep that. That is what I did as you can see from my sig.
