Bit of a strange problem but my XBox has problems playing Forza 3 / 4 with me having to open and close the CD tray a few dozen times before it will read the disc, will play every other disc without any problem from some really bad scratched opens to new ones like Battlefield 3 which load and play fine

Have been thinking of getting a replacement drive which is a Liteon but wondered is it just a case of swapping the PCB board over with the same model number with Liteon drives

Or just pay £70 and send it back to Microsoft and have it fixed as it's out of warranty as don't really want to spend £160 on a new XBox

Tried installing to the HDD? Or is this the Xbox not even recognising the disk to play from the HDD?

Sounds like the drive. The Liteon in mine failed with the same symptoms with 2 weeks warranty left. Install to the HDD helps, but it still needs to read the disc to start the game.

As to the PCB board swap, dunno.

Yes you can just swap the board over if you can't flash it, as long as it's a lite-on drive of the same model you can swap the board over. Firmware revision doesn't matter as you'll be swapping your board, but bear in mind that there is a little bit of soldering required on lite-on drives.

Alternatively you can just get a new laser, cheap as chips and dead easy to do.

Have forza installed to hard drive but had the problem of XBox reading the disc when i first got the game and took me a few go's before it would read the disc and let me install on hard drive

Yep this happened with my brand new Xbox and Forza 4.

Yeah as long as the drive is the same you can just pop the PCB over. But to be fair the laser is also easy to change, they are just a clip fit.

This seems to be an unwelcome side effect of the new disc format. I'd better borrow an XGD3 title off of a mate to see what happens.

Ah, if Battlefield 3 is ok I'd suspect the disc vibration screwing up the tracking. I have some shaped stickers somewhere (small circles etc) I've thought about trying to balance the disc by sticking them on the white xbox live banner part of the disc, but that's as far as it got.
