Has anyone used them, what do you think ? I posted a job up recently and I've got 5 builders interested but I don't know them from Adam, I know you can check what other customers have said about them but you don't really know if they are genuine customers.

Ideally you would need to talk to some of the builder's previous clients & see the quality of the work, & whether they were happy with builder.

Never use that site though.

If you see building work in progress in your area , stop & go be nosy, have a chat about what you want done, sometimes better than trusting a friend's recommendation.

I used it throughout my property renovation.

Used builders, plumbers, chippy, tiller, door guy and a gardener.

Overall, the builders we used were a joke, really did an awful job and I wish at the time I had a little more experience to realise that they were a bunch of cowboys. They had a good profile, feedback was plenty and all good, photo's of previous work looked good.

Plumber. Interesting. Great value, did a good job, perhaps skipped a few corners with tidying - but as I boxed around there work and plastered, I was able to cover up their shortfalls. Again, good feedback. But wouldn't use again, had to get another plumber to sign off my boiler - despite the original plumbers being gas safe registered.

Chippy. Brilliant, got lucky with this guy, old school, low feedback, met him first and he seemed a decent guy and the little feedback he did have said he was good. Would use again. Perhaps a little rough around the edges, but great value.

UPVC door fiiter. Top lad. Would use again.

Tiller. Bloody expensive. Work OK. He had a lot of 'commercial' work feedback and photo's. Wouldn't use again. £350+material for a days work. Every other tiler was circa that price, but over two days. Was in a desperate situation to get the floor down fast.

Gardner. Turned out to be a fireman after some extra work. Perhaps lacking in expertise, but boy did he make a good job of it. Work rate was second to none, enjoyed he's tea breaks and perhaps leaving a little early at times, but have recommended and would use again, if only to shift stuff.

My takeaway, there seems to be a fair amount of people who are first adopters and making the most of it, that often, from my experience, seem to be lacking a little. Seems that the people I dealt with, were unable to drum up business from other avenues (word of mouth etc), so with this in mind, kind of explains some of the issues I came across.

Next time I renovate, i'll be doing a little more home work and steering clear of any online system. Think these platforms need to mature a little more so it's not just the early adopters that are on there... Just my 2 cents.

Not that site but i've used ratedpeople.com for a fairly large job we needed doing about 2 years ago. Got 3 people to quote us and the guy we went with was very good. Gave a really indepth quote and showed where we could make savings if we wanted without too much compromise.

When work started he gave us a sheet of paper listing with various dates showing where the work would be up to. Worked from about 8am to 8-9pm at night virtually 7 days a week. We’ve since recommended him to a couple of people

That would probably be a good idea (i think theres a similar thread on AVforums). The mods might be weary of self promotion though i think.

Always someone posting on here asking for a recommendation for some trade.
Well, as long it isn't a competitor to OcUK, then I see nothing wrong, already done in 'motor section' but mods will disapprove most likely.:(
