mySql: limit and unlimit in same query

i have a query which i want to limit to 20 results shown, but i want to get the total of matching rows from a database without having to have a separate query.

is this possible?

.. or just use two queries as they are two completely unrelated items of data.

sounds best, just thought there might be a simple way to do it but it appears not
