Mysterious shut down issue

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my PC ATM. The machine turns on briefly then shuts off. Sometimes it will get a bit further (as far as booting Windows) but then the same thing happens.

So far I have tried the following in an attempt to troubleshoot:
  • New CPU
  • New motherboard
  • Different GPU
  • Different PSU
  • Different boot drives (NVMe and SATA)
  • Disconnected all other devices (fans, front panel IO, etc)
  • Reduced tension on CPU cooler mounting screws
The only things I haven't swapped are the RAM and the CPU cooler. I'm completely at a loss as to what's causing it. It seems like a power issue to me but I'm not sure. My newer PSU (an EVGA, bought about 16 months ago) doesn't even want to turn the system on.

Here is a link to a video of what's happening: https://photos.app.goo.gl/4VThE7zjyD666CfT7

Any suggestions?

RAM should be the first thing to check, it's also the easiest.

Do your MB have a diagnostic tool built in to check the RAM for errors?

Is Memtest still the recommended tool?

It shouldn't overheat that quickly though.

Most boards didn't like not having anything plugged into the CPU_FAN header. Perhaps that has changed recently. Not something I've tested recently without anything plugged into that header to be honest. Have you had boards work for you without that header in use?

Never tried without a fan :)

What's the default setting in the BIOS is if no fan (rpm) is detected, isn't it just sound an alarm?

edit, just remembered, that header isn't in use on my HTPC, I use a fan controller in the drive bay to keep all fans at a constant low rpm. I must have set the BIOS monitoring to ignore the alert. It's been a few years since I put the PC together.

You have all the parts to build two systems side by side.

I would build both and then swap parts across from each other until one starts to shutdown.

If both start to shutdown, then a problem shared ≠ a problem halved :)

Hi all. Sorry for the radio silence, was away at the weekend.

I ordered a stick of RAM to see if that was the issue. Just tried it and was having the same problem. I have just tried it with a third PSU from a friend's computer and so far it seems to be staying on. It looks like neither of the PSUs I was trying originally are working properly. Fingers crossed that this is the issue...

I had a similar problem recently, building a system out of spares. It boots fine if I add a soundcard and increase the minimum C state, but without either of those things it shuts off before Windows install. Will stay in the BIOS forever. The manufacturer says it needs a DC to DC PSU and support for very low load (like Haswell support) and I don't think the PSU has either. The Asus H110M-D I used before it worked fine.
