on overclockers door step
I've just bought a new CPU, an AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750+, an upgrade from an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ which I'd had for around 18 months. I'm running a XFX 8800GT for my graphics with a Thermalright HR-03GT cooler and 92mm fan.
Before I installed my new CPU Perfect World had always played fine with no glitches. However, since I've installed the new processor the game keeps freezing up on me. I've tried some of the other games I've got (ArmA, Doom3 and Battlefield 2) and they seem fine. After fetching the cover off the PC and having a nose around I noticed a very high pitched noise coming from the graphics card whenever I started PW up but none of my other games (I'd never noticed this noise before I put the new processor in).
I've stress tested and stability tested everything and everything is coming out fine. I've used Orthos and Prime95 for the CPU and 3D Mark 06 for the graphics card. I installed new graphics card drivers when the game first started freezing but had no luck with that, I've even downloaded the game again and re installed it - this ran successfully for around and hour and a half then froze.
This morning I've put my old processor back in and the noise has disappeared when Perfect World starts up and it seems to be running fine so far.
Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening? It's baffled me as to why it's only happening on PW and none of my other games?????

Pardon the ignorance but what's SMP aware?:confused:
Perfect World's a free game I downloaded a couple of months ago, it's a little bit like WOW but free!

I think I've sorted what's wrong with the PC.
The system froze up again on me, just when I was browsing the net this time so I put my old CPU back in and waited for a friend of mine to pop round and have a play with it (he's really good with this sort of stuff!). He seems to think that the memory I have isn't fast enough to keep up with the new processor. I'm running Ocz 4Gb 800mhz at the mo, he says I need some ram running at 1066mhz.
Does this sound like a valid reason for my problems to you guys?

Have you patched PW? It sounds like that game doesnt support the newer CPU architecture fully, if theres an update this may fix the issue. If its only frozen once whilst outside the game that may just be a random glitch, damn computer gremlins

No

Was the CPU new id RMA just to be sure.

What's that mean? Is that something to do with return to manufacturer? It's not been returned before, as far as I know anyway, seeing as I bought it from OC. How would I check this anyway?

As for the PW patch, the game updates automatically.

Erm....nope. I don't know where he got that idea from.
