A couple of years ago I purchased a game extractor for a (now defunct) game I used to play which enabled me to create mods. The game was encrypted so hence the extractor.

I was sent the extractor tool and a key for the software, which I had to login with my email each time I used it.

However, over the years when I decided to reinstall windows, the tool would no longer work and I had to email him. No idea what he did, but he made it work again (no new password or anything, all on his side).

I no longer use the software but still wonder how it worked.

It was a bunch of .OCX files COMDLG32, MSINET, MSWINSCK, Resgistrator (not a typo) and TABCTL32.

Was this software shady or above board?

I assume it was simply connecting back to a server he ran when trying to authenticate and he'd just enable a new token based on your email addy and corresponding license details from when you were sent the software originally.
