Help! :(

Since I first installed windows 7, I've encountered countless problems, some small, some rather more large and annoying. At first I thought it was just the installation, so I did a clean install to see if it would fix the problems.

It doesnt seem to have worked  I still get varying problems and Im at wits end. Could it be a hardware problem or maybe a program i have installed? Or maybe Im just stupidly unlucky

Here's a list of problems I've had:

Failing to boot into windows at all
Windows logon errors, not allowing me to type password at log on etc
No display after returning from sleep mode, although computer is on
App crashes for several programs - on one occassion most stopped working at the same time, sometimes its only the one eg. itunes
Anti virus not starting properly and forgetting virus/spyware databases
No sound, at all
Games seemingly installing correctly, but then giving "has stopped working" message on launch

...and several others

Do any of these issues sound familiar to anyone? Some of the above I have only encountered on the first windows installation, whereas others seem to keep coming back, no matter what I do. Using windows' image recovery fixes almost all problems I've had but it doesnt stop them from coming back and obviously I'd rather not have to do this everytime I encounter a problem.

Am I being dumb here? Everything seems to work fine for weeks and then suddenly problems appear from nowhere..

Im using windows 7 home premium 64bit and using AVG 2011 if that helps. I can also post my computer specs if they are needed.

Any help is MUCH appreciated.

Cheers

There's a chance you got a bad copy of windows... I had a copy of XP that was corrupted from factory and only certain keys worked on my keyboard during the install so I couldn't input the serial key... Tried many keyboards and on many computers and it turned out to be the windows disc... ironic but possible :)

What you can do is download it from HERE, and use your product key you got with the other copy. If that works, then the disc you have, has had it.

If I download the x64 version there and use the key I got with my x86 version here... I don't suppose for a second that it would actually work would it?

Get the iso at the bottom of the first post in that link. I'd suggest using microsofts usb tool and putting the iso onto a flash drive, it'll install faster.

So it's possible that my disc is bad? If I can source another one and try that am I entitled to a replacement from the supplier?

I'll wait and see if anyone else has some input before I go reinstalling windows again. :p

definitely possible.

also, your PC might be unstable. is it overclocked? try taking the OC off.

are you using all your memory slots? try increasing your memory-controller voltage. :)

Not oc'd at all and im only using 2 of the memory slots :( I did notice my memory is running at a lower speed than stated though.

Never had problems with computer turing off when it shouldnt etc, so does that rule out instability?

if it's all stock and you're only running two sticks then unless your hardware is physically faulty we can rule that out as a cause.

Download and run memtest from a bootable CD. You could also try running a stress test tool to check for general stability. Used to be Prime95 in my day, not sure what people would recommend now though.

I'd bet money on it being a hardware problem. Have you tried restoring optimised settings in you bios? This should in theory run everything at stock values.

I'll try memtest when I get the chance, thanks. As for bios, I have already tried restoring optimised settings :(

Yer you can use the same key for both 32 and 64 bit. When we got a new laptop, that had 32 bit windows 7 pro on it, I reinstalled using the a HP retail disc, I made an iso of it and used the ei.cfg removal tool then stuck it on a flash drive, worked no problem. Just had to call up to activate, its automated and took less that 5 minutes so easy peasy.

Nice one! I would have to do a format/fresh install wouldn't I? Can't just pop it over my x86 copy can I? (that would be too easy!! lol)

I'd still be inclined to think there's something not right with the RAM. I built a system a few months ago. Installed fine, memory tests all passed. But then I got random errors like you describe, certain updated refused to installed, MSE would download an update, install it and then moan that it was out of date just minutes later. To make matters worse, the replacement ram was also faulty. It was a case of 3rd time lucky in the end. Have you tried running with just 1 stick of ram, different slots etc?

The problem with that is how do I know Im not just being lucky and getting no errors - It might take weeks to uncover something, meanwhile Im left with only 2gb of ram. It can go periods without any problems, then one pops up from nowhere

I checked and my ram is only running at 1067 with lower timings than advised. Forgive me if this is obvious, but could this be the root of my problems?

Thanks for the reply btw! :)
