n00b amd build

Im starting a new business and was about to buy a new XPS 8700 mainly for app development in visual studio. I had a pc that was a little bit like triggers broom, it started life as a 286 and ended as a P4, so Im not new to system builds, but as you can imagine my hardware knowledge is very out of date.

Can anyone comment on this, maybe I have missed something obvious. I have MDSN so no need for operating system and already have keyboard/mouse and a monitor.

I was thinking of going for 32gb ram and unsure if I need a graphics card, both of these can be added later.

Intel i7 4790K+Z97 will destroy that AMD CPU in every single task.

Also the board you picked does not support that CPU (not many do because of the TDP).

There are also better SSDs such as the BX100.

I have looked at that Gigabyte 4790k bundle, on one hand it is circa £100 more than the AMD but on the other hand its a lot cheaper than the prebuilt Dell. Decisions decisions!

It has a larger SSD than what you may need so that could explain £30 of the extra £100.

But also you skimped out on the board which wont power the FX9590 and then with a suitable board you would have to add a GFX card to get a display.

The Z97 does it all.

In the past AMD seemed to be better bang for buck than Intel, but it seems that the 9590 was a poor choice. It needs a very high spec motherboard with cancels out a lot of the savings compared to the 4790 and this isnt really much cheaper and a lot slower.

The Dell does seem to be good value discounted to circa £650 as it includes a 4gb GeForce, but on the downside the ram is 4GBx4 and would need a small ssd.

What processor does the dell come with as you can only overclock the K version, which is a great way to get more power out of it if you need it down the line.

It doesnt seem to the the k which is a shame. I understand why they arent everyones cup of tea, but my old XPS 700 was very well made.

I don't have a problem with dell, they make good business machines. But if you are willing to build your own you'll end up with a better set of components many of which will have longer warranty than the dell.
