i am trying out the new version of Aperture 3 and had a question.

When I modify an original image, where is the new file that has been modified. I am just using my pictures folder to store my photos and not the aperture library. I expected aperture would put a new file in the folders such as DSC0000-2 or something but there is no new files if I make a modification.

Thanks

I'm not exactly 100% sure on this since I have my images stored as Managed Files, which means they are stored within the Aperture library. Referenced files are stored outside the library, which yours is.

Aperture never ever touches your main master image. Instead your modified or adjusted images don't truly exist. Aperture stores the adjustments you make separately and applies them them to a copy of the master. I could be wrong here as I am just getting to grips with how the library really works.

If you with to get a proper copy of your adjusted/modded image, then you can use the Export>Version feature.

This url may help understand.

Thanks for the link. I had a read of the help file and seem to have a better idea.

From what I understand, once I have made any modifications I have to export the modified image to create a new file to use in other applications. This seems a bit tedious, is there anyway to do this automatically?

Not that I know of unfortunately. You can right click folders containing images and export them (export>versions) or select a large batch of images and do the same. Depends how your images are organised structure wise. The only thing I tend to export to is my online Flickr album for the most part.
