N00b needs help installing GTX970 in new PC build...

Hi,

Apologies for being a n00b, but I'm completing a new PC build... everything seems to be OK except for one major issue... my ASUS x97 ROG Maximus VII Hero doesn't seem to detect my shiny new MSI GTX970 card. (As very recently purchased from OcUK.)

I have upgraded the MOBO to latest BIOS version and set numerous/various BIOS settings to no effect, tried different PCI slots. GPU still not detected.

I'm 99.9% sure the graphics card has power: I have both the 2 8+6 power power blocks inserted correctly; lights are on. MY PSU is a new Corsair AX760.

FYI my onboard Intel 4790K graphics work fine. I have tried uninstalling the Intel drivers and rebooting. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

nVidia driver installation under Win8.1 fails to detect suitable hardware and refuses to install.

I have tried two graphics cards: an old GTX460 and my new GTX970. Neither are detected by the BIOS. I know the 460 works. I have yet to try to 970 in another PC but it's brand new.

In summary, I can boot to Win8.1 just fine and the PC works OK under Intel graphics drivers... but I have the major issue with an external graphics card... Can any of you intelligent and rather good-looking OcUK members help me out?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps the MB bios is set to use iGPU (Integrated Graphics) instead of PCI? Should be a setting where you toggle in between those, you want it on PCI/PCI-E :)

It might be set to auto too, in which case make sure your monitor cable is connected to the card and not the MB outputs.

What Deceptor said.

When you look in the BIOS, does it show the GPU? Not sure on where it is but you would need to change from onboard/IGPU to PCI-E.

Thanks for your replies. Very much appreciated. There's 3 setting in the BIOS from graphics: Auto, CPU and PCIE.

I've tried PCIE and Auto, but neither makes a difference. :/

FYI: Monitor just goes into power save mode if I use PCIE. :/

I had the same issue a few months ago when I upgraded most of my rig. Resetting the CMOS, turning the PC on and then loading the optimal settings in the BIOS fixed it.

I reset it by following the manual, but there are probably other ways of doing so. Doing it in the BIOS or removing the battery for 15 minutes, for example. I had no problems doing it this way and the card was detected immediately after exiting the BIOS afterwards.

Just to confirm the monitor cable is going into the back of the graphics card correct? Not the connectors on the MB with USB and such. Sorry if it sounds stupid :p

OK I've sorted it!.... I combination of resetting CMOS (thanks OryxBeisa) and also replacing the power cables into the PSU (the only thing I hadn't changed) has fixed it.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
