N96 killer ?

Well, had a bit of a play with it and basicly it is just an N95 with a great camera attached to it in my opinion. Im a bit disappointed with it but then I guess I have been using symbian phones for ages now so should have known what to expect from the phone. It is not a bad phone at all, don't get me wrong, but if you have been using a symbian phone for any length of time you will just pick it up and go.....oh right... :)

If you are upgrading from a non-smartphone then you will love it to bits.

If you want a 'cool' phone then go for the iphone or omnia. If you want a feature packed phone then go for this as there is nothing in the market that touches it feature wise at the moment.

I must admit though, I am torn between returning it and swapping to the omnia or keeping it. I think the touch screen interface of the omnia would drive me insane though!

not sure mate, doubt it as everything seems identical to N95. Even the Samsung PC Suite is identical to Nokia PC suite.

Just put a DivX on it. The screen is AMAZING.

I just can't get Palringo to install on it at the moment, Fring comes pre-loaded on to it though.

Another big plus is that it charged from the bundled usb cable

Well overall I am very impressed with this phone after having it for just over 24 hours. It is still basicly a pimped up N95 though. If you are looking for a 'wow, sexy phone' type of phone then get an iphone or omnia. If you are looking to impress your geeky mates with a phone then go for this one as it is specced up to death.

The build quality is great, no slider wobble on the screen at all. Battery life is also a lot lot better than the original N95. I have hammered WiFi, internet, text messages, bluetooth x-fers and used GPS over the last 24 hours and still have 2 bars of battery left. It is also a nice weight and feel in your palm.

The screen is out of this world, just loaded a DivX on to it and it is stunningly good. Very watchable in fact and 16 Million colours and the glossy finish really makes a difference. The added integration of DLNA is a really nice touch, however I cannot get it to work with my Tversity server just yet.

Youtube works on the built in browser via Real Player but I can't seem to get it to work with Opera mobile or Opera mini at present. Another gripe I have with the opera browsers is I can't seem to enable the mouse pointer, it just shunts around the screen from link to link which is less than ideal. Talking of mouse pointers, the 'optical mouse' is really good once you tweak its sensitivity as it is very sluggish at the default settings.

The camera, well it is literally superb. Loads of funky features like face and smile detection- if you don't smile it doesn't snap a pic. Multi shot mode, many iso levels and so on. The only stupid thing is the lack of a Xenon flash which is pretty unforgiveable Here is a sample image taken earlier today at The Trafford Center:

I haven't tested it out as a 'walkman' just yet but the built in media player seems to have the usual functionality and the sound out of the speakers is great, not tinny at all. A bundled set of in ear headphones comes with the package along with several different sized ear plug adapters which is nice. A 3.5mm jack sits on the side of the phone so any cans can be used. Also the hands free mic is not part of the regular earphones, allowing you to use hands free with any phones you like.

The travel charger is of a reasonable size and the phone happily charges off the bundled micro usb lead which is another huge bonus.

Overall, this is everything the N95 should have been. My only niggling gripe is that I now feel like I have had the same phone for the last year and a half after owning one of the very first N95. Samsung have done a great deal to disguise the symbian interface but if you have had a N73 or N95 you will feel like you are still on the same handset. Some people might like that though! I just don't get on with the touch screen interfaces so will be keeping this for the next 9 months at least.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away :)

Cheers for the mini review, hoping I can get this as a free upgrade on 9th Oct (can upgrade then, or wait until 9th Jan when contract finishes. I'm Currently with Orange on £35 (Raccoon) plan.

I can upgrade on Orange, is this a good deal from CPW?

£35 per month on Dolphin (not sure what animal does what!)
18 month contract
600 mins + unlimited texts
i8510 black

Total cost over 18 months = £640.

Currently paying about £504 for 18months on a D900 which has run out.

Is this the best deal around?? I love my Samsung's and the D900 was broken paintballing :(

Got bored so ordered this too - want it now to play with :D

1 x SANTSDHC8GBU - Sandisk microSDHC 8GB Mobile Ultra ( £22.99 each) (£22.99)

Should have looked a bit harder! Just picked up a SanDisk MicroSDHC 8GB + Adaptor for £13.99 :D Bargain!

Just got this phone on O2 (£25 a month/ 200mins+200txts) and loving it!!
The camera is superb (the main reason I got it) and gui seems very easy and nice to use! I'll post some pics later when I have taken it out and got the hang of it.
Great phone, highly recommended.

Yep, the tomtom version you have on N95 works on this handset as they are both S60 phones.

However, I have found that Palringo will not install on this phone, must be due to the version of Symbian on it.

what sort of manual did you get with this phone?

i seem to have just gotten a quick guide that doesnt really tell you anything about the features.

i had a look for an online manual but to no evail

i also think the sound from this phone is amazing and i am contemplating selling my samsung yp-p2 mp3 player as i think the sound is as good or even better from the phone.

what does everyone else think?

I thought the manual was fairly poor to be honest- I only got the quick guide as well and the PDF just tells you about the features but does not explain fully how they work.

DLNA being a prime example of this.

Am still annoyed I can't get Palringo to install as it was my fave mobile MSN client and much better than Fring.

Love the phone and i'm amazed with the camera quality.

The divX conversions also work perfectly on the phone and are crystal clear.

What i can't find though is good quality freeware software for the phone. If anyone can point me in the right direction....... (i've googled but found nothing with great substance)
