My Zalman cooler should be here tomorrow.

Would nail polish remover be ok to remove the old thermal paste on my GPU?

Thanks :)

I've used it before, it worked well for what I needed.
Some people would advise against as it can leave behind a residue which can affect temps a couple of degrees... I reckon it's fine though.

its the acetone in the nail polish remover that does the work, if you can get some pure acetone it'd leave less residue but its hard to find (if not impossible) in small bottles. sure it'l be fine anyway. denatured alcohol is also very good for cleaning stuff. i found mine kicking about from old cassete player cleaners

Yep, i've used that, plus loads of other things... like Ouzo and some clearasil ultra pads  :p
Wouldn't catch me wasting Ouzo like it was, erm, clearasil pads ? :p

That stuffs so good it's illegal!

Lemon juice from a lemon is awesome removes AS5 like a dream :) used it on my cooler the other day as i had nothing else!

it'd probably remove stuff fine but leave you with a nice sticky residue.. not very good for future cooling operations! let alone the bonding of the new thermal paste!

Instead of making a new thread I'l ask in this one.

Do I need to put the new thermal paste on the GPU only, or do I have to put it on the GPU and the bit on the fan?

Ta :)

I got a 50ml bottle of pure acetone from my local chemist the other week :)

oh good work on that! i use if for making my surfboards and can only find it in large 2L bottles, shall be checking my local chemist for my repair kit now! never even crossed my mind :p

anyways, sorry for going off topic..

You can get isopropyl alcohol from any pharmacy... a bottle costs a couple quid and will last a lifetime.

Lemons are far better in your food than in your computer :p
