A while back there was a news story about a successful online text-only game, that as I recall, had been devised by a British teenager (hence the article). I can't find the old article, and I can't remember the name of the game.

Can you help?

All I remember is it being text based (a MUD?), I believe the scenario was a city, possibly of criminals.

Not sure what the game is for you DaveB but reminded me of playing Zork back in the day :)

I remember Zork and Colossal Cave Adventure as well :D

Though neither are what the OP is after.

I suspect it is MUD or one of the variants.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUD

In 1978 Roy Trubshaw, a student at Essex University in the UK, started working on a multi-user adventure game in the MACRO-10 assembly language for a DEC PDP-10. He named the game MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), in tribute to the Dungeon variant of Zork, which Trubshaw had greatly enjoyed playing.[15] Trubshaw converted MUD to BCPL (the predecessor of C), before handing over development to Richard Bartle, a fellow student at Essex University, in 1980.

Yes, the first MUD games was indeed called MUD as well.
