Hi all trying to locate an old game. It was a real time strategy game. I think it had a Chinese/Japanese theme as you had items like Chinese lanterns to clear fog of war and you had gliders that were on rolling slingshots that could be loaded up with a unit and fired once.

You started off in a base with a single wall and gate. You could put units on the wall or behind it. To attack other people you left your map and enter another.

Not got a clue what it was called, any ideas?

Seven Kingdoms maybe? I vaguely remember the game you are talking about, had it for Windows 95!

/Edit scratch that, it was 'Three Kingdoms - Fate of the Dragon', I remember the box art!

That's the one thanks.

Also after another game, another real time strategy this time you control robots and if you destroy the enemy robots you can salvage parts to upgrade/customise yours.

How would I go about playing old games like these? Do I need to buy an old pc from eBay with xp to play them?

Note I only currently have a MacBook.

It depends how old you're taking. But if you have a set of XP disks (and a set of Win 98 disks) then VirtualBox is handy. It's a virtual PC that you can install most operating systems onto. However I don't think it's great when you get into 3d stuff.

There's also DOSBOX which is good for games from the DOS era.

Oh and some old games will work on WIndows 7, so bootcamp might be an idea.

THere are even some games out there where people have written their own version of the game engine and use the graphics and data from original game. The best known examples of this are Open-TTD (a re write of Transport Tycoon Deluxe) and Scumm VM (a new engine for Monkey Island and many other Lucas Arts point and click games).

It's often worth having a quick google for a particular game since often there's some one out there who's made it work.
