What was the mid 90s fighting game that allowed you to knock your opponent off the edge of a fiery pit then they would pop up in front of the screen all weird and melted? I remember it really scaring me at the time :p

I'm pretty sure it's not a mortal kombat game.

Cheers!

The finishes where they're knocked off the edge start at 2minutes 16 seconds, But there are a few different variations depending on the level.

I'm pretty sure chief thunder could knock you off his bridge, And there was also Cinders level too.

Nope that's not it, but thanks :)

What platform? mid-90s it's likely to be either SNES/MD or PS1/Saturn. Quite a big divide there straight away.

I remember World Heroes having fire in some of the levels.

Soul blade?

Nope.

I'm pretty sure it was PS1 and was a 2D game. You got knocked out of a cage at the side of the arena into the lava... IIRC!

It was less cartoony looking and more mortal kombat-esque.

Edit - it was possibly neo-geo.

I refuse to believe nobody knows this game!

I seem to remember that the stage had a cage in the foreground that you fought behind... then when the skeleton came up it would grab onto the cage.

Any more about the game it's self? Was it a 1 on 1 fighter? Definitely the Neo Geo? Normal human characters or weirder ones? etc :)

There's a list of games with fatality type finishing moves here

No idea what your game is though

DING DING DING DING!!!! WINNER!

The game is on that list, it's called 'Way of the Warrior'. My memory of it wasn't completely right, but was released on the 3DO in 1994. Unbelievably, it was made by Naughty Dog, who we now know for the uncharted games.

Here's the screenshot:
