Came up in conversation about books we read in school and the name of this one eludes me, since it was 20yrs ago I read it. I assume it was written in the 50s or 60s.

From what I can remember it's mainly about a Black family who work/live on a cotton farm. They go to church and the father is a strong character, but the main story is that the son who is about 10 or 12 is lynched for the murder of a white shop owner who's is killed when some white men use him as a lookout whilst they rob a liquor store.

No end of weird searching is helping me find the name of it.
There is a second book also to conclude the story.

That's the one. Thanks.

Ps.. The sequel was 'Let the Circle Be Unbroken'

Don't remember finishing it, just read it to see what happened to the kid in his trial.
