Game was found. Soldner-X: Hummelssturm (or Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer with the accents.)
I never played it, but seeing the "Best shmups on MAME" reminded me of it.
This was PC game released mid to late this decade, e.g. 2005 to 2009. By a small label or independent publisher.
I can't remember if side or vertical scroller, think side. You controlled a nimble space craft.
You could buy it new for under £20 as a special edition that included a music CD (I think) from places like Playasia. The box art was dark blue and black.
I'm sure if title began with S, but only names I could come up with didn't lead anywhere.
