Name this thing

Ok, I am having massive google fu failure....

I am looking for the name of an item that can be used between two objects to stop those two objects from getting closer together. Basically a brace. It needs to be adjustable, i.e. has a thread that can be loosened to be expanded and then tightened to stop it from reducing in size, thus stopping the two objects from moving closer to each other.

Basically, I have a banister, that has a child gate on it, but the banister is flexing to not allow the gate to close properly, so I want to brace the banister against a brick wall that it has an air gap next to (of about 4 inches).

Make sense?

hah! Thought not. I guess a good example of what I am on about is a shower curtain rod that allows you to expand it to put pressure on the walls at each end, but smaller.

Ah, yes, that might yield results... Though spreader bar probably isnt a good thing to search for whilst you are at work!! LOL

Also try looking at mini acrow props. Thats the sort of thing you need I think.

like a straight stair rail brace but it twists in the middle to close the gap.

My grandparents had one on the stairs where the rail went past the roof to stop the rail moving as much.
