In particular for Elephant/Admiral policies.

I'd guess it may be in the T&C somewhere but does anyone know...

You can add named drivers to a policy and this generally brings the cost down. It only asks details about the driver and their age/occupation/claims/convictions etc but doesn't ask about the type of license, specifically.

I was playing about and added a friend just to see what difference it makes and it dropped by a significant amount. Problem is, this friend has an auto only license and the car is a manual.

If this person never actually drove the car (but was on the policy), would this be an issue?

Thoughts?

Step brother had my mother on his policy despite her holding an auto licence, never had a problem when he totalled his Escort.

If the website asks then yes but if it doesn't ask then no (as long as the person with an auto license does not drive it!). The reason for being insured is probably being is that they could be learning to drive a manual.

I add my parents to my policy as they haven't had claims and have no points. They don't ever drive the car but it knocks £200 off the policy.

That's what I wanted to hear  shouldn't be a problem then!

I didn't think there would be an issue but it doesn't really say anywhere.

I already have a parent as a named driver and I thought of adding a friend who might actually drive occasionally and it brought it down some more.

Then I added the other friend with the auto only just to see what happened and that made a huge difference.

Thanks for the input :)

I'm with Admiral.
My wife is on my policy - it reduced the price by an amount that made it worthwhile.

She only has a Provisional license and has never driven my car.
I'm pretty sure they do ask what type of license the named drivers hold.
If a provisional license holder can drop the price of my premium it should be the same for someone with an Automatic license - as they too would be provisional in a manual.

I've never understood why people go for auto licenses, I had to convince my gf to do a proper manual one, at least then you have the choice!

I only used to put me mam on the insurance, if I put dad on there it went up slightly (still cheaper than having neither of them on there though).

Yes, my mistake, they do ask - you can select UK Full Automatic on a manual car though and it still goes through ok.

Like you say, it would be classed as Provisional thinking about it.

Someone I know just couldn't get to grips with a manual car. Took several tests and LOTS of lessons but just never clicked.

Had a few lessons in an Auto and passed an Auto only test first time.

Strange really.

Not surprising that they found the auto easy because it is, one foot and no gears to have to think about (obviously bar the park/drive/reverse).

I didn't find driving a manual "easy" but I got used to it and now I'm glad I did.
