Went to hear a lecture about nano technology today at collage and i found it really amusing :)

they were on about how nano technology may be able to make memories for computers which 1 cm(squared) of silicone can store 1.2 terabytes of information :eek:

apparenlty by the year 2017 nano technology products will make about 1.7 trillion pounds :rolleyes: so thats my future sorted. im gonna become a nano technician :D .

I did a course on nano technology this year at uni, was the first module I've actually enjoyed in all 3 years of my chemistry degree.
 
Was it a proper lecture on the ins and outs of nanotechnology, or was it a lecture full of hype?

I'm midway though a nano science module. Its joint physics and chemistry.

Its too descriptive for my liking though at the moment. I like Maths and sums and physical descriptions, not hand wavy "this happens because it does" :p
 
ehhhmmm whats the difference of the 2?

it was only bout a hour and a half, and was based around the powerpoint presentation she had.
 
There was an interesting story today on the BBC about nanotechnology being used to repair damaged nerve fibres and restoring sight in hamsters.

iv seen a group of people make a new part of the brain for a mouse so that they can controll from a computer.

In the 50's and 60's they said we would have slef-driving cars and robot housewives.

Nanotech has been the "next big thing" for ages and until somebody shows me some nanotech doing something I won't get too excited.

It is like robotics. Wake me up when they make a robot that can go upstairs with hot coffee and not spill it.

One of my lecturers Ivan Parkin has been telling us about research he's been doing involving nanocomponents identifying cancerous cells, surrounding them, and vibrating at high frequencies to create isolated heat spots to destroy the cancerous cells. It's applicaitons like that that fascinate me :)

I want a self driving robot housewife. ;) People do want self driving cars...just look at all the effort Mercedes have put into their active cruise control with radar. Hell the system can even perfom an emergency stop if the Autobahn comes to an abrupt stop.

Not sure about the robot housewife, but I am sure todays busy men and women would like more automated help around the house. After all our lesuire time is precious.

Still Nanotech is good, but only when the have the one that can repair my cells like the Nanotech in Kim Stanley Robinsons Red Mars series.

Well there's a slight difference between a car that helps you brake and thus not die and a car that drives itself and kills you.

Speak for yourself. I'd love those things. Not in a physical sense of course, there's some things you really need another person for :D
 
My company has been spending about 10% of their R&D budget (70million a year) on Nanotechnolgy every year for the last 15 years or so.......

We give a large chunk of the money to local Universities for their Nano research....

heres some info

According to the R&D director at our site......we are no further on from where we were 15 years ago - even though our company is the world leader in storage & regarded as second in this specific nano field (behind IBM)

About as much chance of me seeing any use out of it in my lifetime as cyborgs....but at least it not out of my wages.
