NAS Backup Device

My friend has asked me if I can sort out a NAS backup device that has:-

RAID1 (use 2 x 2TB but give HD prices this might be a bit rich)
user accounts for certain folders (like a network drive)

I was looking at either

QNAP Turbo NAS TS-210 or Synology Diskstation DS211J and I was wondering whether anyone had any comments on either of these or any other storage device?

The intention was to plug in straight into their talktalk wireless router and then set up connections from there on in.

I would be interested what people think as well as i have the same dilema only the four bay ones. Can anyone tell me if you can download from newsgroups on both these machines without having you pc on.

Yes to Synology. Very happy with mine (DS209) - can be set up to run with Sabnzbd, add in a nice Android/iphone app = remotely add downloads to my NAS so they're done when I get home, no PC required.

I can't comment on QNap as I've never used them but I think they offer similar functionality. Synology devices are well supported with regular updates to DSM (the software to manage your NAS) giving added functionality.

There are cheaper ways to set up your own server / backup / storage device but in terms of simplicity, you can't beat it.

I have a DS212j and it's brilliant. Easy to setup, easy to use and configure, good performance... yeah.

The most important factor here is the RAID1 and the use of individual folders over the network, so as long as this works I'll get this ordered.

It's not strictly RAID1 but mine is setup using Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) which is essentially the same thing (I think it theoretically allows you to use different sized disks).

I have 2 x 2TB drives in SHR mode with an external 2TB drive for backup. Works well for me!

Individual folders over the network are no problem. Each user has their own log in details and can't see/access other users' folders.
