Need one to integrate with Active Directory. Found 'Freenas' but it's based on BSD and I need it to be Linux really.
Know of anything that just 'works' ?

Freenas is a really good choice, any reason why it must be linux? Im not sure there is a dedicated linux NAS distro, but it wouldn't be too hard to install something like Ubuntu server and configure some simple samba shares and any additional services you might require, but it would be harder than using something out of the box designed for the purpose like Freenas.

I need to run a Firebird server on it too; can't see an installer for BSD on the 'site.

Ok in that case, i would recommend looking at either CentOS or Ubuntu Server, they should not be too hard to configure for what you need. Set up Samba for the network file sharing, configure SSH so you can use SFTP if you need to, and install firebird and any thing else you need.

This approach has the advantage over going with a dedicated NAS OS because generally speaking you cant install your own 'extras' onto them and are locked down the the designed purpose of the distro.

There are numerous tutorials for locking samba (and other *nix) auth to an AD server (it's basically LDAP at the end of the day....)

Don't forget to get the latest OpenSSL update ;)

FYI I got this working with SLES10; seems to be a much better package since I tried it last. Can log into the shell with AD accounts too, winnar!
