would like to run 24/7 via wake-on-lan via wifi?

what are likely costs to run? is it easy better to simply buy off the self nas unit?

I would like to know how to setup up a NAS. I already have a semi-decent setup in the form of my old rig. Still works fine. Probably would need a bigger hard-drive.

Depends if you want a project or not. NAS enclosures tend to use very little power, are small and depending on what you get great software.

What do you want it to do? If it is just streaming some vids/music and backups I would look at a Qnap or Synology DS212 series. Reviews HERE

Benefits of a build like you ahve specced is more capacity for additional drives and upgrades. Could slap in a copy of windows home server and you are away.

I run a HP Microserver with WHS 2011, The Thread

Mine pulls 30Watts when the 3 drives are spun down.

It has now been upgraded to 1.5 x 2 CPU and 2gb ram, I am wondering if I add another 4gb to make it 6, will it be able to run windows 7 smoothly for web browsing? Although it does not seem to have any Sound slots?
