I am on the lookout for a NAS device to allow me to store all my MP3's/Photos/etc in one central place on my home network which would allow all my pc's/laptops/mini-itx systems to be able to access it easily. It also needs to be able to support backups from the attached PC's. It need to be realitivley small (so that rules out assigning a PC as a server), quite, NOT need wierd driver software installing on all my client (a la Netgear SC101!!) and if possible have USB connectivity as well as 10/100 RJ45 connection. Print server functioality would be nice as well.

Just looking for a 'shell' at the moment as I have a couple of spare 3.5" drives knocking about which would fit in fine.

I've tried the Netgear SC101 but that needs proprietory drivers and re-formatting the HDD I intended to use which is currently filled with my MP3's and do not have enough spare HDD space to back off 150gb of music elsewhere whilst I format and transfer.

Any suggestions??

Yup
Been looking at those, the only problem is I only have IDE drives spare at the moment, if I have to start forking out on drives I might just as well by a terrastation.

That said I have seen the Icybox N1000 and N2000 boxes which look promising and a darned sight cheaper

You could take a look at the Synology 101J. It's been discontinued now but is IDE, fanless, doesn't need any drivers installed, and is on sale from £111 without drive.
