NAS + disks advice

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice and answers on purchasing a NAS and disks

I was looking for the following, and want to put it in RAID-1.

NAS: Synology DS215J
DISK1: 3 or 4TB Seagate NAS
DISK2: 3 or 4TB Seagate NAS

It's just for storing downloads, movies, series, personal documents, software installers.

1. Would that setup be good? If not what would you recommend?
2. Can I have it as a drive in my Windows Explorer? Is it just a share I can mount?

That's a solid enclosure that will serve you well.

1. For disks my preference would be Western Digital Red's/ That said whichever you go for the nas specific ones are best.

2. Yes you create shares and then mount them on you pc so they show up as network folders. You can then use them as you would any folder on your pc.

Another vote for WD reds. I would personally (and have) get the HP Microserver which can be had for around the same price as the DS215J. The HP is a proper server so you can install whatever you want on it - Windows, FreeNAS, another Linux distro etc.

If you want something that just works out of the box as a NAS, then yes the DS215J will do.

I would say the DS215j would be fine. I once had a DS213j (the previous model) and as a storage unit and serving up a file now and again to the htpc it was perfectly fine.
 
Another vote here for Synology and WD RED's - highly recommended.
Super low power useage compared to other overkill NAS's, and a VERY easy to use GUI ;)
