NAS for a Noob, advice needed

Hi all

As the title says, I'm looking for a NAS for my home, essentially so we can store all the media, pics, documents etc in one place and access it within the network and from outside the network if possible! As time moves on, I am becoming more and more of a noob when it comes to this stuff, my limit is building/setting up PCs, so I'm looking for as close to a plug and play devise as poss.

In terms of backing up the NAS, I probably only really value the documents and family pictures, in the grand scheme of things, I'd not loose much sleep if I lost all my music in a fire. So my intention is to back up onto a portable 1TB HDD which I already own, and store off site.

I thought the WD Mycloud looked pretty good and included an iTunes thing, which my wife would probably fine useful, similarly the Seagate version looks to do a similar job, both around the £130 mark

So my question is this: am I missing anything, should I be looking at one of the Synology devices because of functionality/reliability/speed/apps etc, they seems to be quite popular amongst many of the people here which says something.... Currently we'll need the following to access it: Windows tablet, PC, Windows phone, iphone, android tablet, all with need varied access levels

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Tom

Synology is stupidly easy to set up. Their DSM software is updated constantly and support tends to last a good while.

How fast is your broadband? Might be worth looking at CrashPlan or similar for an off-site backup.

Thanks both of you, you clearly think its worth the extra cost, I think it works out at about £170 for a single bay with a 3TB NAS drive, so I think I can stretch to that.

Is this what I should be looking at?

Are there any limitations to the Synology drives, anything that the WD ones have that I might not know? I know its a difficult one to answer but I probably don't know all the stuff that NAS drives can do, its a bit of a learning experience for me and one I'd rather have more time to do but both my PCs are on the last legs and if I don't do something now, I could be up the creak!

More likely to be the other way round. In my opinion there are only three makes of NAS worth considering: Asustor, QNAP & Synology.
Personally, I prefer Asustor to Synology as their hardware seems more modern and their OS is now very good but they don't make a single drive NAS.

Thanks Snapshot for your advice, I think I'm going with one of the Synology products, I wonder now if anyone can advice if the DS115j is powerful enough to be accessed by potentially 3 devises for media and also documents. Or should I need to be going for either the DS115 or DS215j?

Really appreciate your advice btw
