I've got a media player (Pixel Magic MB200) which supports samba. It'll play music or video directly from my iMac or my XP PC. It's capable of seeing anything that's put into a shared directory. On the Mac, I've enabled Windows sharing, so presumably it's enabled samba support?
I've also got an Apple Time Capsule - an NAS device that natively supports OS X, and also supports samba if Windows sharing is enabled. This device can be seen by my iMac and my PC. Media can be played from it on both computers.
Problem is, I can't play files from the Time Capsule using my media player. The media player sees the device as a samba server, but not the files that are on it. My iMac automatically connects to the Time Capsule, because it remembers the login password. On my XP PC, I have to login each time I access it. I'm assuming that the media player can't get access as there's no facility to enter the login details or password. It doesn't seem to be possible to disable the password on the Time Capsule - very frustrating.
I'm thinking that it'd be nice to get an NAS that runs samba, but without requiring a login from the client. Is there such a device?
It needs to be accessible from XP and OS X, so will need to translate it's internal file system to something "open" (do all NAS devices do this?), and it needs to run as a samba server with no security.
