I've recently bought a Synology DS411j NAS unit and I've got the thing linked up to my PC but I'm having problems just installing the DSM. I choose the .pat file for my NAS from the software CD and select quick setup. But when it begins the installation at stage 1 - Apply network settings it fails and comes up with the error : -

Quick configuration was not completed due to connection timeout. An error occured during installaiton. The telnet service of DiskStation is turned on for error determination. Please configure your router to forward port 23 to DiskStation and contact Synology online support.

Now I'm not sure where to change the port 23 forwarding. Is it in my netgear router and if so where? Or is it in my Comodo Firewall settings? Again where?

 :(

in your firewall. I dont know what it is you are doing, but I suspect its a service/ bit of software taht requires Synolgy to actually talk to the nas, in that case they need port 23 opened on your firewall on your network and forwarded to the nas

But that doesn sound a bit odd, and I'd question why they need that access. (backdoor spying ? )

When I look at the network connection (LAN connection 2) it is saying theres little or no connectivity and when i click a repair connection it comes up with failure when renewing IP address. Now I'm not one to go around messing with IP addresses DNS servers Submask nets and whatever other settings there are with networks. Where possible I just select the automatically configure IP address. So i dunno if I've got to change something to get this connecting properly.

You shouldn't need to touch the firewall/router if you're doing everything on the LAN. Post the issue on the Synology forum. They're usually very helpful.

looks like you need to give your second card an ip address and setup dhcp on that interface, as the synolgy requests a DHCP lease to get a network address. Your router probably already has dhcp built in. Can't you just plug it into your switch and it should just appear on the network.

I was hoping that I could just plug it in and it would work but it hasn't. The light on the box appears green so it is recognised its just that no data is being sent. I am tempted to uninstall my firewall instead of just turning it off as that hasn't worked to see if that can bypass it to get it up and running. When I go through the setup it does suggest an op address for the nas but it just doesn't connect.

You won't be responding to dhcp requests on your second adapter, unless you have explicitly configured it. So it won't get an address when plugged in like that . You either need to plug it into your router/switch so it can get a dhcp offer from it, or configure your second adapter to offer requests. This isntspecific to your nas, it's basic networking .

Well, the idea of the NAS would be to have it directly connected to your router, not your PC. Plug it into your router and it will all work, simply. As Whitecrook suggested.

+1

You should have your NAS on a wireless router that's the whole point of them.

Right ok, thats probably where my problem lies then. The router is through in the other room attached to my dads mac at the moment so I'll need to shift my NAS through there and hook it up to one of LAN ports. Presumably I'll still get everything set up on my Pc as it will be wirelessly connected and just set things up so that it only backs up and can be accessed by myself?

Networking stuff has never been something that I've quite grasped as you'll see :D

Its working now. Thanks.......now lets see if i can get it up and running from here on in without any problems :D

I'd suggest you set a static address to the NAS, or set a reservation on the DHCP lease to ensure it's always the same IP, just to prevent later headaches if networking isn't your thing.
