Hello,

I am finally going to try setup a NAS so I can stream my movies to xbmc and also I would like to backup my macs. What's the best way to do this?

I was thinking of buying a HP ProLiant N40L, upgrade to 4gb ram and stick windows xp on it so I can use sabnzb over teamviewer? Is this the best way to do this?

I am completely new to the server/nas world so be nice :)

Regards,

I'd recommend installing ESXi 5 so you can install multiple VMs. Then you could run XP/Ubuntu/Windows Server 2008, anything you fancy.

No need for ESXi unless you're really interested in virtualisation. You could use remote desktop instead of TV when you're on the same LAN.

Well he said he wants to stream stuff, backup stuff and have XP installed for something, so I'd say virtualisation is needed in this instance, unless he wants to use XP as a server OS? Could be made to work I'm sure but wouldn't be particularly simple.

Why does he need to install VMware to backup his Mac?

Just buy a decent Synology with more than 1 SATA bay, that will give you what you need, you don't need any kind of virtualisation.

The Synology range are awesome.
