I'm back baby!
So my NAS is available outside my router, I can access all files and so on via FTP and HTTP when at work or out and about.

What I'm struggling to do is work out how to stream media from there to mobile devices. Either I cannot find an app good enough to do it or my NAS just isn't capable. It's DLNA compatible and outputs to my PS3, PS4, Smart TV, all mobile devices when they are on the local network via VLC, MLPlayer, Good Player, 8 Player and everything else I've tested it with but none of them will stream content when away from the house. I'm wanting to do this for both android and for iOS.

What do you think, have I got something wrong on the NAS or is this just not something offered at the moment? Is there an app that will do this for me that I just haven't found yet? I do want to stream, not download and play.

I'm only using lite versions of the apps for the moment because I don't want to buy them all only for them to not be suitable (happy to buy one if it's right for me).

What NAS do you have?

I know that many people use a Plex server to achieve what you want to do. Some higher end NAS units allow you to install Plex server on them.

As stated above plex. Is a good choice.

Another option is to setup an openvpn server on thke nas the connect via vpn remotely so you appear as if local. Personally i think this is more secure.

What has do you have ? When you say you cannot stream, is the app when out and about establishing a connection and can not just play back video or does the app just not connect to the nas when out and about? If the latter streaming could be over a different port which could be blocked on your nas or on the router
