Hey,

I need an external solution (preferable redundant) to store my media. Are the barebones solutions suitable for this? Are there any that support RAID?

If not, I was thinking of buying a 500GB HDD for the storage and then another 1TB HDD. I'd then setup the OS of choice to make backups to the 1TB HDD.

Thanks guys

most barebones systems should be great for a NAS/file server type role, probably a bit overkill in some cases lol

I've only ever really used Shuttle and mini-itx based systems before but now days they all tend to come with RAID, if not i guess you could buy a cheap PCI sata/RAID card depending on what kind of RAID array you want.

I'm doing a similar thing my self at the min, I've got a small mobo thats designed for embedded systems mainly but is half decent spec wise (pentium M 1.6, ddr mem etc) so fits the bill quite nicely for a file server. It's not got any onboard sata/RAID so I'm usin a cheap PCI RAID card. As I found out of another member of this forum, PCI should have plenty of bandwidth for RAID 1 which is what I'm gonna use so thats no problem. I'm usin 2 1tb drives to basically store all my media/photo's etc and to store the backups of all my other PC's (was thinking of getting my other PC's to do backup every couple of days or so)
