How do i do this.i have my VM superhub (not so super), can change for a dir615(with dd-wrt on it). the hub feeds into a netgear gs108 gigabit switch, and all pcs, access points, and qnap nas is connected here. my pc has 2 network controllers and so does the nas.what i want to do is connect the pc direct to the nas via 1 or the controllers/ports on each and the other controller/port connect to the home network as normal.how do i do this???please

So your PC would have a direct connection to the NAS, and another connection via the switch?

What are you trying to achieve? I can't see that it would make it any faster.

It'd require static IPs (probably on a different subnet) for the additional connections, and you'd probably need to set the metrics on the network ports. You'd then need to access the NAS via its IP address (or add a hosts entry).

thats right.i was hoping it would be quicker when i access large files, as on the link direct to the pc i can enable jumbo frames, where as on the link to the rest of network can just have 1500mtu

No, sorry I havent explained it quite well. I have a standard Netgear 4 point router which one of my pcs is directly connected via cable to one of the ports the other port is used for the nas box.

As this is all new to me I followed the instructions to the point at which the configuration wizard kicks in but it keeps saying timed out when trying to config. but I can access the nas box through the web - I have tried to get the installation configuration done on 2 other pcs on the net (wireless) and again it just fails on configuration- do you think its a port in my router that is stopping it? I can ping the nas box from all computers just cant get it to complete the install, really doing my head in now as all I want to do is drag and drop some files onto it.. I cant find any info on google re this issue and tbh the quick start guide from zylex is pants!

Has anyone else come across this situation and if so how the heck did they get past it,, in respect of the PPoE if I am required (and cannot for the life of me remb if I need a password how the heck would I find out what it is?) Other than that their isnt much I can think of to get this sorted, So thought over to you Guru's

Jumbo frames may not make much difference. I'd try the PC and the NAS connected directly together in isolation as a first step. This would just require static IPs and a cable and would allow you to test the difference in throughput.

Wrong thread I assume?

When I have used nas enclosures with dual ethernet links I found that overall in the home using two connections made very little, if no difference to the speeds I achieved. Link aggregation is more a redundancy/large volume of simultaneous connections type affair. It does give a very minor boost but nothing you would really notice in the home in my opinion.

For info I tested both the Synology DS721+ and QNAP TS-269 Pro.

thanks WD

i know it probably wont make too much difference, but as qnap wants it connected to the pc direct, im having speed issues and because i want to do this, just to see for myself and maybe learn something new.

i would still like to connect 1 port on the nas to the network and the other port on the nas direct to the second port on the PC.

i have connected it and made the IPs the same subnet, but different to main network, not using a crossover because i thought these new motherboards didnt need it, auto negotition, which is turned off so that could be a problem, and dont see anywhere to turn it on. its a marvell yukon 8056 on an asus p6x58d premium.

I tried to do something similar when i had a wireless lan as well as 2pcs connected (on the wireless) via 1GB network.

First you can try increasing the metric setting for the network card attached to the switch, this should mean your computer uses the network card going to the nas first. I found this was quite hit and miss though.

The other option is to assign static ips to the network cards on the pc and the nas which are connected together with them being on a different subnet to the cards going to the switch. You should then be able to connect to the alternative ip of the nas and have it use the direct connection that way.
