Hey.

I've decided I can probably get more "bang for my buck" if I build my own system. I'd probably look at unRAID so I can also use it for Virtualization in the future.

I'd like it to be a good spec, don't worry about the HDD's.
Call me overkill, but I just found these and stuck them in my basket.

I like the fact it comes with 2 x M.2 connectors, - 6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (SATA3 0~5) and also - 2 x SATA (ASM1061) which I can put 2x HDD on for the CCTV in RAID1 (which will be more than adequate for this setup.)

Maybe someone can talk some sense into me...
I like the QNAP series such as the *53A but I think for the price you pay, I could build something a little better.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £450.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)

If you're building a NAS or CCTV server, you don't need the speeds of M.2 connected drives. M.2 is nice when you're sat in front of it and watching it speedy boot, but its not really that much faster than an SSD in everyday use. If you are building a server and don't want to buy a QNAP or Synology (because of perceived capability vs cost) - buy a server.

You've got 2 motherboards in your basket.
And you'll need a case that supports the number of drives you want, and will probably want to think about removable drive trays.
Again, I'd just buy a server ;)

Haha, whoops! I only intended on the 1 lol. (I've updated my original post, thank you.)

Just get a G8 :p
That's not something I've actually looked into... Let me guess, are they expensive??!

What you have listed seems overkill to me.....is that really going to work out cheaper?
Well, Maybe now there's only 1 motherboard. But, the QNAP 1282 for instance, the i3 starts from £1780+ (Diskless)

That was my exact though after seeing that!

and will probably want to think about removable drive trays.
I don't think I really care about "hot swapping", saving some extra pennies just to spend a little time opening up a case I don't mind (right now) but the option is always there in the future I suppose!

Just something I missed... ECC memory. Although that 1282 i7 uses a "i7-6700" which doesn't support ECC. I thought ECC was important for NAS systems.

A HP g8 will most likely set you back about £120. Then you could up the ram and CPU if required.

Can’t help you there I’m afraid as I’ve done no research into it.

It’d probably be a mATX board with a 1700/2700 when it comes out.

3/4 PCI slots for my NIC for pfSense and the SATA SAS cars.

Then something with IPMI or the modern equivalent such that I can shove it in a cupboard and remotely control it as I do now.

Current board is a super micro so perhaps next will be too.

ECC support (for what it is worth) would also be on my list to protect my backups.

I’d isolate the second set of cores for my VMs and the first set would be for UnRAID/dockers.

I jumped in on a QNAP 853A 4G... I decided an out the box solution was right for me at this current time.

*walks off shouting "what have I done..."*
