hello all,

i'm trying to understand NAS - i want to find a NAS unit that will plug into a router, and be seen by a tvix player

on their site, it says:

Currently, M5000U supports NFS and Samba network facilities. So, depending upon the NAS product, you may select more appropriate network protocol.

1. NFS
For speed and stability, NFS is preferred to Samba.

Once NFS is supported, it is very easy to set up the NFS export directory in NAS devices: just export relevant directory as named tvixhd1 so as to be nfs-mounted from M5000U.

[ Netshare Program Download ]

[ Netshare Manual Download ]

2. Samba
For compatibility and easy-to-use, Samba is preferred to NFS.

M-5000U supports two kind of Samba authentication(a.k.a. security level) model.
i) share level: enable guest access and network create resource named tvixhd1 as guest permission
ii) user level: create account named tvixhd1 and change the password of the account tvixhd1 as tvixhd1

do i have to get a specific nas for this to work?

thank you

If your looking for a simple home user solution companies such as Netgear provide low cost solutions like the SC101, these will plug into any LAN based switch.

Stay clear of the SC101 - it needs you to install its own software on EVERY machine that will access it. In my opinion its not a proper NAS and Netgear should be slapped for selling it as such!
