I am looking to get a NAS box (Synology DS209j) to stream my media to the PS3 directly but have a dilemma. For best performance I guess it should be connected directly via ethernet to allow 720p mkv playback.

However, I also want to be able to access the contents of the NAS via my Wireless network so the other machines on my network can see it.

Is there any way this is possible- i.e. the NAS is directly connected to the PS3 and a wireless network at the same time? I can't see how without getting a wireless switch.

I have a router running DD-WRT which acts as a client bridge at the minute, if the NAS and the PS3 were both connected to the router would that suffice?

Sorry for being such a network noob!!!

If you connect your NAS and PS3 via ethernet to your router, it will be available wirelessly, yes. :)

Thanks for this- and will the NAS be connected to the PS3 via ethernet? I am not bothered if the NAS is connected to the other PC's or iPhone via wireless or the internet as I will only be playing mp3s back on those.

The PS3 will be used for mkv files and last night it struggled badly playing an mkv from PS3 media server on my main rig, hence the NAS idea.

The router does exactly that, routes the connection. If it has both wireless and ethernet, it routes both. Each device connects to the router, which then connects to the other device, so if both are ethernet, it will be ethernet all the way.

As above, If you have ethernet between PS3 -> router and ethernet between NAS -> Router, it would be the same as having the PS3 connected to the NAS by ethernet.

You get the added bonus of now being able to share the device also over the wireless.

That's great news. And this will work even though the router they are connected to is in Client Bridge mode with IP addresses being allocated by my ADSL modem/router? The router is running DD-WRT firmware.

Thanks for your help guys :)

because the ps3 only has 100T-base ethernet you wont see any performace increase/decrease by using the router, so it should be all good :)

(ive been meaning to post more on these forums :( )
