hopefully the right area in the forums here....

I am after a NAS system for where I live. I have read quite a lot on various websites but still have a few questions.

What I need is a drive that works with Windows7 and Mac OS10 (I think), and probably iPhone/iPlayer. I would be great to get access off site to it as well, especially if abroad and want to dump some photos on it, etc... Does a NAS drive only backup files from areas of my pc that i tell it or is it a mirror image?

I was thinking one of the Synology DS110/DS111/DS211 drives, as almost anywhere says they are very good quality and reliable, and quick to download/upload etc. only trouble is a bit expensive.

But size of harddrive... at present we have not filled a 320Gb external drive, or half of my PC HD (500Gb) with stuff, and the laptop HD is not half filled either. I guess 1Tb will more than cover all our needs for several years to come. Not worth spending the extra to get 2Tb as will not use it. Is this the case??

Is it worth spending the extra to get a Synology and a separate HD or get one of the cheaper drives that is all in one, say the LG one that overclockers sell?

I am not worried about outright performance, just something reliable and easy enough to use.

Cheers for any help :)

If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful single drive NAS then the Western Digital Live Hub 1TB is a pretty good bet. Its basic but covers all of your requirements.

If you want the option of extra drives for redundancy, more expansion etc. I would heartily recommend any of the dual drive Synology that you mentioned. Though the DS211J is probably the sweet spot. Drives are expensive at the moment though.
