Hi,
Just a bit of advice, I want to turn my old pc into a NAS, I just need to work out what I need.

I have a: MSI neo2 mobo, P4 2.8, 120GB IDE HDD, case, cd drive

How much RAM do I need (ddr)?

Any cheap, quiet PSUs?

Anything else?

Cheers

WHS won't be out for sometime according to your links.

In the mean time download ubuntu. Will make a perfect nas box.

Cheers, looked at Freenas etc will give them ago.
In the mean time, any recommedations on how much memory I need as I want to keep it cheap (otherwise ill just buy an off the shelf one). Seems 256b ddr is only about 20 quid.

(Im gonna start off with XP as I want to get it up and running and its already installed, dump my files on my new rig, wipe the old drive and then set up with freenas etc and store stuff)

I put together a NAS box with some old parts a few months ago, works very well. An old XP1900 with 512 RAM and some HDD's.

Used FREENAS, quite easy to setup I thought. I use it to backup stuff onto so set the mobo bios to turn the machine on at 8pm and configured FREENAS to turn it off at 10pm so its on for a 2 hour slot to back up on. I suppose you could extend this to say 9am - midnight if you need it all day. Saves some power.

Works great.
