All over the world...
Hi all

Right ive decided that im going down the NAS route as my ext hds are taking up far too much space on my desk and id prefer having just a box with some massive storage in it.

So ive decided on the Synology DS211J NAS box...ive heard good things about it but am open to any other suggestions. Basically i just need a box that i can put all my HD movies, Mp3s and photos on there and be able to stream to my LCD in my room. I have the AC Ryan Playon mini HD network streamer so will be using that with the NAS box.

Anyhow im looking at a pair of 1tb HD's to go into the NAS box...so any recommendations as to what HDs i should pick??

All advice and info would be most welcome, im new to all that NAS stuff but am interested in getting something that just works with minimum of fuss. Plus as i have 2 ext hds...it gets tiring having to plug/unplug each one into my network streamer box.

Synology are a good brand. I would get 2x2TB HDs if I was you.
Are you going have your NAS on a network or just Playon with the NAS plugged in the back?

Cheers Deuse for the reply...yeh i think ill stick with synology...heard a lot of good things about them...the model that im looking at...is that pretty decent for what i want it for?

Hmmm not really sure...at the moment my network is 10/100 but i do have a gigabit switch which im not using at the moment...thing is my laptop which serves as my main pc now is only 10/100 and not gigabit.

What do you suggest??...should i have it on a network or just plug it into my playon box?

Most people have their NAS on a network. My very small one is like this
VM modem-to-Wireless router-to- gig switch then I got my NAS\PC going into the switch.

So I can access the NAS from the internet any where in the world or by wireless in my place.
Don't forget some new TVs have network and DNLA so does the PS3 and 360.
So all those can access the NAS and play films\MP3s\photos.The NAS can also download torrent or NZB.

And loads more..

Yep thats exactly what sort of setup i was looking at myself ie connect the NAS box to my network then connect the NAS box to my playon via the network.

Im interested in the torrent downloading capability the Synology has as that will free up my laptop for other things to do.

Cheers...will prob order it on mon along with 2 x 2tb hds as well...any particular hds i should be looking at??...or are they more or less the same ie the cheap ones compared to the £80-£90 ones??

I only use HDs with a 5 year warrenty but that's just me.
If you look on the home page of the NAS you chose it will tell you what HDs is best for that NAS.
I think Synology has a phone app so you can do stuff from your phone i.e save photos\vids and other things.

Just ordered the 211j and 2 cavier green 2tb drives. should arrive soon. will keep you posted :)
