Hi guys (and girls!)

I recently bought a Synology DS212J and 2x 2TB WD Red HDDs, successfully installed and running in a RAID 0 array (I have an external backup for my important files)

I started transferring files last night from a 1TB HDD via a USB2 dock (Took AGES!!) and whilst this was happening thought I would read up on how to stream my Bluray rips (legit ones btw) from the new NAS to my TV.

I have a Sony BDV790W which is connected via wireless to my home network.. however I am aware that this cannot play MKV files natively.

Is it a case of setting the Synology to trans-code media?

I've also noted that the Synology has a Plex media Server app, however upon installation I cannot see any settings for media transcoding?

I have read online that perhaps the 212J isn't powerful enough to trans-code 1080p media.. if this is the case do I need a separate media server to do the work for it?

And.. what would people recommend?

Thanks :)

Jaket, could you give me some tips on setup as I tried to set it up last night and I feel I may have done something wrong.

I used a tutorial I found online.. just doesn't seem to work.

I was tired at the time mind lol

From my understanding, the 212J is a bit underpowered to run Plex (which transcodes on the fly!) but if you want a good dedicated media player, I use the WDTV Live and not had it struggle with any file types so far!

I had been thinking about buying a Boxee as I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Is it just a case of buying one of those or a WDTV Live and connecting that to my home network?

Will either of these output 5.1?

Bought a WDTV live and it is superb.. plays everything!
Just need to sort out metadata etc now so everything looks nice for the misses lol

Thanks for the info :D

I have a WDTV Live and have a couple of Hd-DVDs that I've experimented with as an uncompressed MKV file (mainly because the hd-dvd software for my PC's drive no longer works). It is a little hit and miss if they stream (they work fine on the PC). the 14gB file seem to stream ok but I have 20+gb file and that doesn't really want to (or it gets to a point and the box crashes). This is running the files from a usb drive attached to the WDTV box. Compressed 1080p files run perfectly.

I'd say if you have compressed the files then definately pay £75 or whatever and get the WDTV Live box. It is brilliant and streaming via a network and the control is really easy to use. I like the fact that if you use youtube, you can plug a usb keyboard in to type stuff in rather than using the on-screen keyboard
