What benefits are there for choosing open media vault or freenas etc over a proper Debian server running greyhole

One quick benefit I can think of..

Can run freenas from a tiny USB stick/memory card

Greyhole is just a Samba share (CIFS) isn't it? OMV and FreeNAS are full fat NAS OS's, so implement more than just Samba shares.

Yup. Just need the correct JDK, a few terminal commands and you're golden.

From the above guide replace: wget https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.6.1/minecraft_server.1.6.1.jar with whatever the latest jar is (or keep it if it's the latest).
