hello

been thinking about this for a while now, and my money is on the up ;)

want to make a nas for my media but havent done anything with computers for a while so im not clued up with the latest
if someone could spec me up a build that could support streaming to 3-4 people using OSX and windows
itunes support too
(it will store 200-300+gb music, 500-600+gb hd video )

some software to run it too... i was told about some software a while ago had a poke around with it but cant remember what it is now

in terms of cost, i want to keep it relatively cheap (main reason why im not buying one from shop) but want it to support my needs)
hard drives are not needed i have a few 1tb's doing nothing

thankyou

80 quid plus hard drives.

Depends on how much you want to play around and if you will look to using it for other functions. It also depends if you have the bits around to build another machine.

If you have most of the hardware around from previous upgrades then it may be worth it.

I am building a C2D based NAS with 4GB ram, 2 Intel network cards, 5x1.5TB raid 5 array. Yes it is very much total overkill for a home NAS box but most of the hardware was just floating around at home anyway doing nothing.

I will also be using it for a local DNS and DHCP server.

I also have a DLink-323 NAS box with didn't quite make the grade but is great for hacking and there are quite a few applications out there complied for it (google for "fonz funplug"). I use it as my shoe box sized torrent server.

I've just got a single drive WD my book world 1tb.

Handles everything fine, media streaming, backups. I put bit torrent on it so it can handle downloads overnight with an RSS reader to automatically download new stuff.

Putting together "servers" at home to share files between a few people is a waste of time

I've been using a ReadyNAS Duo and it's been good.

Not the quickest, but for what I use it for it's fine.

Used as a file store for me and the wife, use it to stream to the TV over DLNA, and has some other little apps installed that can run so I don't need to leave a pc on :)

I just wanted something that had a bit of redundancy so the 2 disk system was fine, also keep a copy of some of the data elsewhere.

Would quite like to upgrade to one of the nice 2 bay Synology enclosures, but at around £350 it's a little overkill!
