Hello
I am currently using a terramaster f4 220 nas
As I think that I am pushing the cpu/ram to its limits I want to see what options I have
I have it placed in a utility room along with the router so looks are not important.

Could I get a xeon server and put the drives there? What options are there for that?
What I can get in terms of something better cpu wise that will not break the bank?

Thank you

You 'think' you're pushing it to its limits? This is something that should be quantifiable, not a gut feeling.

Any discussion about this kind of device needs to include what it's going to be used for, and where it's failing to meet expectations at the moment.

Given the way electricity prices are heading, I wouldn't be rushing to replace it with anything that'll consume more power without a very good reason. My fixed tariff ends in April, and my Unraid server is getting some very suspicious looks.

As above, how is it struggling ? Are you seeing it stuck at 100% CPU usage, struggling transfer rates etc ... not a gut feeling. Are there services running on it which you dont really need?

One thing about a server is they are big ... really long from front to back, and generally noisier. Regarding power use, servers use more. Some times lots more.

I have an old R520 Dell server running unraid, It replaced an old WD Ex2 Nas which really did struggle ... and there is a marked difference in its speed / responsiveness. I ppicked the R520 as it was known to generally use less power than the R700 series and as a server is designed from the outset to run 24/7. Would I change it for something else on the fear of power usage ... not in my case at the moment.

My old Nas used about 20W. ( small 2 bay )
My current R520 reports using 70W ( 5 drives )
A modern synology type device would be in the region of 40W usage
A modern PC running unraid would also be in the region of 40W usage.

So to go modern, I would saving about 30W ... but spending hundreds to do so, which I cant see being worth it just yet.

I am seeing near to 100% usage when I am even downloading torrents to it and it will not utilize the full speed.
The only services I am running are plex, emby, multimedia server and transmission.
Obviously I am not in dire need to update but I would like to think ahead a bit if possible
