I know nothing about this so forgive my lack of knowledge.

I want to be able to store documents at work somewhere other than on my computer and be able to access them from different computers.
I would like to mirror my hard drive on a regular basis.
If possible I would like to put sage on two computers and sync them so if necessary I could go and work on the other computer and all the data would be up to date.
More for the future but it would be nice to retrieve data from home, however is only a possibility for now and isn't too important.

Would something like this be ok?

Also what extra software would I need?

I have a synology nas (albeit older) and would likely use them over the other brands (although thecus/qnap are meant to be good too) so will give you the info I can answer based on the synology you linked to :)

First off - 2 bay is a good choice, especially if you mirror it for redundancy.

Mirror Drive on a regular basis - yes, various options available but I would likely map the nas to a drive letter in explorer and then use another app to 'sync' the folders. Think there was a synology sync app too but can't remember off the top of my head.

Sage and sync - don't use sage so not sure on sync but if it's just accessing a 'storage file' the files it should work.

Outside your home network access - yeah not a problem, you would need to change router settings to get access and you would be able to use ftp or (I haven't used this) use the Anywhere/Anytime Availability part of the package you listed.

I can access mine from the web, I use it for a mini web server (port 80) and ftp (port 21) server without issue.

Thank you, we are back to full staff today so I have time to look a bit further into it all. The sage thing I have seen done but I'm reasonably certain it was installed on a server, but then that is purely a guess :)

Thanks again.

Skydrive sounds perfect for this usage

Thanks Bledd.

I have been looking at cloud storage, I am still umming and ahhing over it certainly from a security angle due to the sensitivity of some of the data. It may be an option for backing a NAS up though, off site backups seem to be a good idea in my mind.

Depends which you buy. Some will and some won't. I bought a Zxyel for 40 and it obviously didn't but oc do them preloaded aswell.

Cloud storage is the way to go,security is fine as you can choose how they encrypt data now anyway.

Another question. Do they come with drives installed or are they extra?
depends on which you buy, some have drives, some don't.

OCUK have a 'populated' section in the nas lists, these include drives unlike the one you originally linked to :)
