I am thinking about getting a NAS that i can use to stream media to various devices in my house. Tablets/PC's/Laptops/TV's etc.

I believe in order to do this with as little trouble as possible it will need to be a DLNA NAS.

Is that right?

Additionally, this NAS will be where I store all of my ripped movies and TV shows.

I would say a 2TB nas would be sufficient?

Can someone spec me a NAS that would suit my needs? Most of my content is full HD 1080p...so it would need to be able to stream that stuff without stopping to buffer.

Thanks!

Sorry for not including a budget, i have no idea what some of the prices are and what i should expect to pay.

I've just undergone the same issue as yourself, the os Im.using is freenas and it supports addons such.as dlna (though your pc and laptop shouldnt need it, streaming to a console or tv might though),my goal was to try an keep.things reasonably low cost and low powered, over all it looks like it will cost £333 pound (thats including a 3tb nas drive) - how does that sound?

Is DLNA hardware level or software level?

I was under the impression that it was built into the hardware?

Why do you use freenas? What advantages does it have over the standard OS that comes with a NAS? Is it complicated to set up?

Did you build this one yourself?

I'm not sure if i want to build one myself.

But the price/size you quoted sounds ideal.

Honestly ive not bought the items.yet,.buy before I did I dl freenas and tried it out on my old pc - phenom 9950 on an asus m2n68-vm with a a laptop drive, and all worked without a hitch, easy to setup, I couldnt really tell you any benifits/issues with freenas, its free and I got it working, only real reason I plan to use it.

Thanks for your advice.

Anyone else have any more information that would help me grab a NAS suitable for 1080p streaming? 2-3tb in size?

If it helps, I would like to use Plex Media Streaming.
