Just a few miles north of The Strip, Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits like a diamond in the desert. One of the most complete racing complexes in the world, its 1,600 acres include road courses, a three-eighths mile oval, a dirt track and a state-of-the-art drag racing facility.

At its heart, however, is the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway, home of a 400-mile race in the Cup Series, as well as Nationwide and Truck series events.

Construction of the $200 million complex began in 1995.
Nearly 2,000 tons of concrete were originally used to build more than 100,000 seats. Shortly after Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track in 1998, it announced plans to add 22,000 seats in the Dale Earnhardt Tower overlooking the frontstretch.

The first NASCAR race held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was a Truck Series event in 1996. The Nationwide Series held a race there in 1997, and a year later the Cup Series made its first visit with Mark Martin picking up the victory in 1998.

Construction of the Richard Petty Terrace in Turn 1 was completed in 2006, allowing fans a shot at 14,000 additional tickets and pushing the track's seating capacity to nearly 150,000.

Additionally, the track saw several major changes in 2006, as the entire surface as reconfigured with progressive banking installed, as well as fan-friendly features in the infield and moving pit road closer to the straightaway. Beginning in 2007, officials made grandstand seating during NASCAR weekend smoke-free.

So, any predictions? Kyle Busch won it last year, and in '08 as well.

Looking forward to this, especially now I don't have to watch a stream. I will be pulling for Smoke but will also be happy to see Kyle upset Junior Nation again.

I will be streaming this and I am looking forward to it.
So we have two races in two days...I just want D Patrick to be in the top 20 and Dale to be in the top 3.

Yes I know wishful thikng :)

What the hell was his pitcrew doing? but well done to Harvick :)
And Patrick needs to get a move on and start pushing the guys back.

I want Dale jr to come in the top 3 which I think he will unless another idiot takes him out with a bad move.

He lost places every time he came to pitroad. They had a 'mare.

She was doing what she was supposed to do. Ran well, climbed as high as 3rd during the green flag stops, zoomed up to McDowell and tried to take him on the inside. He turned on her, and wrecked her. At least he had the class to admit it was 100% his fault.

I'm not sure mate, I think he'll run well but I'd be surprised (delighted, but surprised) if he made the top-3. In all honesty, I think a Toyota will win here. Maybe Petulant ***** Busch, maybe one of the others. Mind, I thought US F1 were more likely to make the grid in Formula One than Campos, so there is a distinct possibility that I know jack **** and I'm talking rubbish :)

Johnson again with the win. Hendrick looked strong with Gordon leading most of the race. Junior falling out with his crew chief mid race, I can't see him having a long term future with Rick Hendrick. Logano looks to have made strides after his rookie season as well and another good finish for him.

Johnson showed why he and Chad Knaus have dominated so much recently, at the start of the race the 48 car really wasn't that good it seemed, but setup changes in pitstops and 4 tyres rather than 2 gave him the win (and some great driving of course :p), great to watch those last 20 laps or so :)

Kinda feel sorry for Jeff Gordon though, spend most of the race in the lead comfortably, and then lose the race in the last 20 laps, oops :p

Peg, did you watch the Open Access coverage? if so how was it, I'm thinking seriously about getting Sky for this and other motorsports but not sure...

I did watch it on Open Access. It was the same coverage we used to get on NASN with the American pre race build up etc. The bitrate was not brilliant, a bit like ITV on the Sky platform. I think Open Access is also available via Freesat.

I voted for the 'Hugs N Kittens' car, I mean who doesn't love kittens and baby seals :p

I so want to see Kyle Busch in a pink race suit, and I don't even have the hatred for him that JRS seems to :p
