Track Details

Completed : 1968
Distance : 1.99 miles
Shape : Road course
Turns : 12
Last year's winner : Juan Pablo Montoya

Right. No doubt this will get as much interest as previous NASCAR raceday threads (i.e. bugger all). Which is a shame, as this track sidesteps one of the major complaints a lot of you have about NASCAR by having that most wonderous of devices - the right-hand turn.

Last year, Montoya won. It was a bit of a fuel mileage gamble allied to a lot of skill and a considerable amount of luck. This year....the skill is all still there, but the luck isn't really with him right now and the car is a bit of a dog. So he's probably not going to repeat the win.

Marcus Ambrose (he of Aussie V8 fame) has been quick in practice, and lines up 7th. He could be in with a shout at winning this. Jeff Gordon is well up there, he's always been good around Sears Point. Kasey Kahne got pole, and also looks pretty good. Kyle Busch is 30th - joy of joys!

Race stream links should end up being posted here. If you need help accessing them, the FAQ is here. Sky should be showing the race live if you have the right package. Race starts some time after 15:30 ET (20:30 our time). I shall now leave you to get on with ignoring this thread :D

* - or Infineon if you really must call it that

Just to let....well.....me know, the race is due to start at 17:20 ET.

In summary - nuts to the lot of you, I'm watching it :D

what time is that here

and crucially where can i watch it ?

was watching re-run of michigan on Channel 5 US the other day. Had to laugh when the safety car came out, and Earnhardt junior was crusing behind the safety car with the engine switched off.

Totally different world to F1, love the fact, that when the race went over the initial laps and everybody's fuel strategy went to pop, everybody had to come in and do a "splash and dash" as the commentaters called it.

Eastern time is five hours behind. For the mathematically challenged, that means that 17:20 there is 22:20 here.

As for streams:

You'll need Sopcast for the Peltvision stream from that thread along with VLC Player.

Or you can just get Sky.

I choose Sopcast + VLC because I like to get the full experience. And for that, you *need* American TV adverts....

Right, nearly time for the off....and dear God I forgot how much I hate the TNT race coverage compared to Fox.....

The Fox crew (Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Darrell Waltrip) are much better.

This is the worst part about this stage of the season. No Darrell yelling "Boogity Boogity Boogity!!!!!" when the race starts :(

What about the other dude, Jeff Hammond, who has also crew chiefed for Darrell Waltrip in the 80s? I like the insight they bring both to the race strategy and technical side.

Yep, in another life I will probably be an american :D

Got to say that was impressive by Kyle Busch to come from 30th to 1st even though I've heard some people saying he's a grade A tool. I saw the after race interview and he seemed a decent bloke but that was the first time I've seen him so maybe I just caught him on a good day :p

You did. He was actually getting towards likeable on Sunday evening.

Shame, really. I want to like Lewis Hamilton but he winds me up too much. I want to hate Kyle Busch....but not only is he horrendously quick and very talented he has now mastered the art of not sounding like a complete arrogant ****.

Bugger.

nice of who ever it was to take out montoya...

there racing lines are well wierd, and they do have extremely soft settings it seems? they bounce all over the place.

Marcos Ambrose. He got what was coming to him, though - he got taken out for good later on. Very good effort from Montoya to fight back the way he did - but without Ambrose he could have won it. Hopefully this'll be the start of Montoya and his Ganassi team stringing a run of decent results together, rather than another flash in the pan like the spring 'Dega race where he finished second.

i miss montoya :(

That's Joe Gibbs for you. He has years of experience of dealing with "Characters" from his time as a "Hall of Fame" coach of the Washington Redskins and no doubt he will be having an influence on Kyle Busch. Busch seems to have raised his game since his move to Gibbs and wins in whatever he is driving wether it is Truck (in a small team), Nationwide or Cup racing and whatever kind of track wether it is Road, Short, cookie cutter or super speedway. In my opinion the only thing that can stop him from being champion this season is he is a winner and not a safe points driver and maybe there will be races in the chase where he goes for the win and ends up with little instead of settling for high points positions. I was surprised with the good reception he got at the end, maybe the Americans are beginning to realise what a talent they are watching and with him being so young he may be around for another 20 years yet so they better get used to it.

Don't really know a huge amount about NASCAR but I guess going round an oval you don't change gears much, what do they do at Sears Point, different gear box?
