Nasty noise on engine spooldown?

Hi all,

When doing my cambelt I noticed a rather nasty rattling noise coming from the exhaust manifold / turbo area upon spool down (revving to 4k and letting go of the throttle makes it happen, only on the engine slowing to idle though)

If I didn't know better, I'd say it sounded like turbo blades hitting the casing... so panicking I whipped the airbox off and checked for play in the shaft. Turns out there is no lateral play, and very little up/down play, so seems this cannot be the issue.

Also, being the inventive person I am I took the outlet pipe from the turbo off the intercooler and shoved my ear in it, and did a few rev tests - on spool down the same nasty noise happened but wasn't noticeably coming from the turbo via the pipe.

I know the cat is rattly, every time I hit a slight bump at low speeds it rattles to hell.

Any ideas what the noise on spool down is though?

Its a rover - Probably someone left a pipe behind the manifold whilst showing off his turbo down the old peoples home

Apparently it can be the wastegate rattling, but not too sure on the validity of this

As soon as I read the first line, I thought actuator rattle.

When are you next in work? I'll have a listen if you like. I'm not fixing it for you though... space is *tight* even for my little girl hands!

I had a similar thing, turned out to be a heatshield somewhere.

Hardly an issue, my old diesel made lots of horrible noises

just feel that because this car is pretty much mint, it's a shame to have a rattle like that.

No major issues, car is running sweeeeeet and boosts like hell

So much nicer than my tractor

A rattling actuator is hardly the end of the world. It can happen to any car, not just because it's a Rover
