National Insurance Numbers

I work for the Civ and part of my job over the past couple of years has been stints on one of the National Helplines.

We use the National Insurance number to access ALL of our cases, but a surprising number of people call who don't know theirs and wouldn't have a clue how to find out what it is. A common belief is that if a child is under 16 they never have their own number, but if a benefit is claimed on their behalf they will be allocated one, no matter how old (or young) they are.

I was just wondering what the general consensus on here is?

Do you know yours?
Do you know where your NI card is?
Have you ever had to use it?

A little more reading here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_insurance#National_Insurance_number

Do you know yours? Yes (and my brothers for some reason!?)
Do you know where your NI card is? It was binned many moons ago
Have you ever had to use it? The number yes, the card no

Mine is in my drawer with my other important stuff. Got it in the post just before i turned 16. Also know it off the top of my head for some reason even thought i've only needed it a handful of times.

I've only ever had to use the actual card once in a job interview.

I deal with NINO's all the time too, but our system also includes a last name search which is always good with some of the clients we get :p

I know mine, I know where it is and I think pretty much everyone has had to use it at one point?

I know mine, thought it would be best to remember it just in case.

Surprised how many times I've had to use it so far and I've not had it 2 years yet.

We do have a search system that uses name, date of birth, postcode etc but customer's are "encouraged" to have their NINo to hand to cut call waiting time :)

Seems like the majority of people know theirs or can at least put their hands on it if need be. Wish more people like you lot rang our place :p

You get some corking answers on the Helpline sometimes though.

"Do you have the National Insurance number?"
"No, but I've got my NI card. Can you use the number on that?"

i work for jcp and don't know my NI, as i have been brain washed with thousands of other NI numbers each week.

But i always carry my NI card in my wallet. Dont need to use it much apart from filling in uni/work app forms.

Also at work we always get:

ME: can i have you NI number
THEM: no get your own
ME: very good....*sigh*

People at work say "Have you got your NINO" and they get a blank look back and then they have to say "Woops I mean National Insurance Number" :p

We get a very similar one to you but its "Can we use the number on our 'dole' card"

I don't know mine off by heart, but I have my card on me most of the time. I've only ever had to use it for providing information for employers.

I've known mine since I first received it and always remember it. I also have the card. Rarely use mine being a sahm for the time being.

I know my number
I lost my card when i lost my wallet(still have the paper part)
I have used it a lot when dealing with HMRC and claiming back tax.

The issue i have justnow is my P60s having the wrong NI number on them by one digit! :o PITA.

Loads of interesting replies on here, glad most people know what there's is and what it's for. I must just be really unlucky on Helpline!!!

"Can I take the customers surname, please?"
"13th of April."
